A few years ago we celebrated the 100th anniversary of radio. In the early years of this medium, the pioneers among listeners often sat bent over with just about their ear in the receiver to take in the much-needed benefits of this invention. However, the number of listeners and radio stations was very limited in those days. Radio sets in certain countries had to be handed in to the occupying forces during World War II and raids were held to achieve this result.

Then, from 1958 to 1990, a tidal wave of radio stations was added in Western Europe, by means of the offshore radio stations that operated illegally or not, depending on which country they targeted. Most legendary, of course, was Radio Caroline, mentioned in all radio history books.

After the disappearance of the offshore radio stations, a new form of radio emerged at about the same time, at first mainly brought by nerds, who were delightfully experimenting. But due to many technical developments in the past three decades, internet radio, which in the year 2023 is mostly called on-line radio, has taken off very fast and there are already more than 100,000 stations operating worldwide. In principle, these stations can all be well received as this form of transmitting the signals is done digitally over the internet and therefore does not depend on any form of interference.

Moreover, the technical development in the field of computers and other equipment to be used is great and it has become affordable for many to buy this and start an active radio station. Of course, it is far from possible in every country to just start a radio station without complying with the regulations in force there, while there are also dictatorial regimes where it is made totally impossible to access the internet in this way.

It is Paul A Rusling who has written a handy and also interesting book, ONLINE RADIO a Guide for Broadcasters and Listeners. He takes you by the hand on the path to online radio and recounts the last 30 years that this form of radio has grown. Of course, the aforementioned aspects are covered, but there is also extensive coverage of, for example, technology, the financial side and formats to be used. It also contains the necessary information on special online receivers and gives a detailed description of people who are currently of great importance within the industry. A list of special publications is followed by a wonderful list highlighting the abbreviations used. In conclusion, Rusling finally states that the Future is Online Radio!

Enkele jaren geleden vierden we het gegeven dat de radio 100 jaar bestond. In de beginjaren van dit medium zaten de pioniers onder luisteraars vaak gebogen met zowat het oor in de ontvanger om het broodnodige aan deze uitvinding tot zich te nemen. Wel dient gesteld te worden dat de luisterschare als ook het aantal radiostations in die dagen zeer beperkt was. Radiotoestellen in bepaalde landen dienden tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog bij de bezetter ingeleverd te worden en werden er razzia’s gehouden om tot dit resultaat te komen.

Vervolgens kwam vanaf 1958 tot en met 1990 een vloedgolf aan radiostations er bij in West Europa, middels de zeezenders die al dan niet illegaal actief waren, afhankelijk gericht op welk land men de programma’s verzorgde. Meest legendarisch natuurlijk Radio Caroline, die in alle geschiedenisboeken over radio wordt genoemd.

Na het verdwijnen van de zeezenders kwam ongeveer gelijktijdig een nieuwe vorm van radio, eerst vooral gebracht door de nerds, die heerlijk aan het experimenteren waren. Maar door vele technische ontwikkelingen in de afgelopen drie decennia heeft internet radio, dat anno 2023 vooral on-line radio wordt genoemd, een heel grote vlucht gemaakt en zijn er al meer dan 100.000 stations wereldwijd actief. In principe kunnen deze stations allen goed worden ontvangen daar deze vorm van over brengen van de signalen digitaal via internet gebeuren en dus niet afhankelijk zijn van welke vorm van interferentie dan ook.

Bovendien is de technische ontwikkeling op het gebied van computers en te gebruiken andere apparatuur groots te noemen en is het qua prijs voor velen bereikbaar geworden dit aan te schaffen en een radiostation actief te beginnen. Natuurlijk is lang niet in elke land het mogelijk zo maar een radiostation te beginnen zonder aan de daar geldende regelgeving te voldoen, terwijl er ook dictatoriale regimes zijn waar het totaal onmogelijk wordt gemaakt om op deze manier toegang tot internet te verkrijgen.

Het is Paul A Rusling die een handig en tevens interessant boekwerk heeft geschreven, ONLINE RADIO a Guide for Broadcasters and Listeners. Hij neemt je aan de hand mee op het pad naar online radio en verhaalt over de afgelopen dertig jaar dat deze vorm van radio is gegroeid. Uiteraard komen eerder genoemde facetten aan bod maar wordt er bijvoorbeeld ook uitgebreid aandacht besteed aan de techniek, de financiële kant, te gebruiken formats. Ook staat de nodige informatie te lezen over de speciale online ontvangers en geeft hij een uitgebreide beschrijving van personen die binnen de industrie momenteel van groot belang zijn. Na een lijst van speciale publicaties volgt er een prachtige lijst waarin de gebruikte afkortingen worden belicht. Concluderend stelt Rusling tenslotte dat de Toekomst Online Radio is!
