Vier uur Noordzee Top 50 van 310874 via foutemuziekradio.nl met Ferry Eden
Deze zomer van 2024 kijken we terug op wat er alweer vijftig jaar geleden op zeezendergebied voor de Scheveningse kust gebeurde. Zaterdag 31 augustus 1974 werd op zee de laatste uitzenddatum van Veronica en Radio Noordzee Internationaal. Veronica zond die middag de Top 40 uit, maar RNI koos in plaats van de Top 50 een afscheidsprogramma’s van de deejay’s. Er kwam wel een laatste gedrukte Top 50 editie 180, maar de hitnoteringen hadden daarop plaats gemaakt voor woorden van afscheid. Juist na 6 uur ’s avonds trok Veronica de stekker uit de 538-zender na een emotionele afsluiting door programmaleider Rob Out. RNI had tot 8 uur live vanaf het zendschip MEBO II een speciaal programma met alle medewerkers. Daarna was het ook stil op de 220 meter middengolf, op 6205 kHz van de 49 meterband en kanaal 44 van de FM. Helemaal stil vanaf zee werd het niet, want het zendschip Mi Amigo had net voor die finale-datum koers gezet naar de Theemsmonding voor de Britse kust. Van daaruit zonden zowel Caroline als Mi Amigo gewoon door op 259 meter middengolf.
Niettemin was het verdwijnen van de zeezenders voor de Scheveningense kust reden voor treurnis voor iedereen die er met plezier naar geluisterd had. Niet verwonderlijk dat een halve eeuw later nog zoveel mensen aan die tijd terugdenken. Veronica, die als omroep organisatie vanaf lente 1976 voet aan wal kreeg, heeft het zeezenderverleden levend gehouden. Vlaamse Mi Amigo en Britse Radio Caroline gingen nog door tot aan het volgende decennium. In de jaren tachtig was er toch ook nog ruimte voor muziek vanaf zee met de terugkeer van Caroline spoedig geflankeerd door de Nederlandse zeezender Radio Monique. Het ging door vanaf zee tot de komst van officiële commerciële radio eind jaren tachtig. Menigeen van zestig jaar en ouder herinnert zich de muziek uit juist die zomer van 1974. Het naderende einde van de zeezenders trok toen veel extra luisteraars. Die wilden op het strand of hun vakantieadres nog één zomer genieten van hun vertrouwde popstation vanaf zee. Pas in de loop van augustus ’74 ontvingen Veronica en Radio Noordzee officieel bericht over de datum waarop die nieuwe anti-zeezenderwet van kracht werd. Die toen niet uitgezonden Noordzee Top 50 van 31 augustus 1974 werd als retro hitlijst met Ferry Eden al eens eerder uitgezonden. In deze toepasselijke periode een halve eeuw later misstaat een enigszins vernieuwde 2024-versie niet. Naast de vijftig beste platen van die beruchte zeezenderdatum hoor je ook de reclames en de muzikale vormgeving van toen met de nieuwste Noordzee-jingles die slechts die laatste augustusmaand van 1974 gebruikt zijn. This summer of 2024 we look back on what happened fifty years ago with Offshore Radio off the coast of Scheveningen. Saturday, August 31rst, 1974 was the last broadcast day of Radio Veronica and Radio Noordzee Internationaal. Veronica presented the Top 40, but RNI preferred individual farewell programs by the deejays instead of the Top 50. A final printed Top 50 edition 180 did appear, but the hit listings on it had given way to words of farewell. Just after 6 p.m. Veronica pulled the plug of their 538-transmitter after an emotional close down by program director Rob Out. RNI broadcast live from the broadcast ship MEBO II with a special program with all staff members for two more hours. After that it was also silent on the 220 meter medium wave, on 6205 kHz in the 49 meter band and channel 44 VHF. Music did not completely silent from the North sea, as the Mi Amigo radio ship had set course for the Thames Estuary off the British coast just before that final date. From there, both Caroline and Mi Amigo simply continued transmitting on 259 meters MW.
Nevertheless, the disappearance of the Offshore Radio stations off the Scheveningen coast was cause for sadness for everyone who had enjoyed listening to their programs. Not surprising that half a century later, so many people still think back to those days. Veronica, which managed to continue as an official broadcasting organization from spring 1976, kept their Offshore Radio past alive. Flemish Mi Amigo and British Radio Caroline continued broadcasting until the next decade. In the 1980s, there was still room for music from North Sea with the return of Caroline, soon flanked by Dutch Radio Monique. It continued broadcasting until the legalisation of official commercial radio in the late 1980s. Many people above the age of sixty remember the music of that very 1974 summer. The approaching end of the Offshore Radio stations attracted many additional listeners at the time. One more summer, they wanted to enjoy their familiar pop station from the sea at the beach or their vacation address. Only two weeks before that new anti Offshore Radio law would take effect Veronica and RNI did receive official notice about that. The August 31rst, 1974 RNI Top 50, as a retro chart-hitparade with Ferry Eden had been broadcast before. Now in 2024, half a century later, it seems appropriate to ‘broadcast’ this Top 50 version – slightly updated – again. In addition to the fifty best records from that memorable Offshore Radio date, you’ll also hear the commercials and the latest North Sea jingles, used only that August month in 1974.
