Retro Mi Amigo Top 50 van 30 juni 1974 in twee verschillende uitvoeringen met Ferry Eden
Op 31 augustus 2024 herdenken we dat het vijftig jaar geleden is dat Radio Veronica, Noordzee en Atlantis hun uitzendingen voor de Nederlandse kust moesten stoppen. Radio Caroline zou – ruim tien jaar na de start – gewoon doorgaan, geflankeerd door Radio Mi Amigo, die nog maar sinds begin 1974 uitzendingen verzorgde. De Vlaamse zender zorgde met de reclameopbrengsten dat beide radiostations vanaf zee konden blijven uitzenden. Het Mi Amigoverhaal leidde vooral na het van kracht worden van de Nederlandse anti-zeezenderwet tot bizarre avonturen, toen vanuit de Theemsmonding voor de Britse kust.

Zomer 1974 lagen er voor de kust van Scheveningen drie radiozendschepen: de Norderney van Radio Veronica, de MEBO II van Radio Noordzee en er tussenin de MV Mi Amigo van Radio Caroline & Mi Amigo. Anders dan Veronica en Noordzee van Nederlandse eigenaren, was Caroline als sinds 1964 een Britse zeezender, terwijl Mi Amigo eigendom was van de Belgische zakenman (van oorsprong wafelbakker) Sylvain Tack. Hij had zich bij de Caroline baas voor heel veel geld ook voor de helft ingekocht als eigenaar van het zendschip.
Voor de Zeeuws Vlaamse kust was er ook nog het vierde zendschip Jeanine van Radio Atlantis met als Vlaamse eigenaar Adriaan van Landschoot. Vier zendschepen voor de Nederlandse kust was wel heel veel vrije radio vanaf zee. De rooms-rode Nederlandse regering, die toch niet veel op had met die commerciële ‘piratenzenders’ vanuit de internationale wateren, wilden de medewerking daaraan bij wet gaan verbieden. Met die naderende wetgeving in het verschiet bevonden de zeezenders voor de Nederlandse kust zich in hun nadagen en niemand wist toen hoelang ze nog konden uitzenden.
Voor Caroline-eigenaar Ronan O’ Rahilly, die in 1968 al de Britse anti-zeezenderwet trotseerde, leek Nederlandse wetgeving geen belemmering om door te gaan. Hoogstens was het lastig dat het Caroline-House in Den Haag dan tot het verleden zou horen. Mi Amigo baas Tack, met zijn kantoor en centrale studio’s in Breda, zou met het van kracht worden van zo’n Nederlands wet ook moeten verhuizen. Hij had al plannen om hiervoor uiteindelijk zijn Spaanse vakantieverblijf in Playa d’Aro te gaan gebruiken. Het zendschip op de vrije Noordzee was ongrijpbaar voor elke (nieuwe) Nederlandse wetgeving. Op het zendschip werkte men aan een tweede livestudio om daarmee de twee radiostations tegelijk te laten uitzenden in plaats van Mi Amigo overdag en Caroline alleen ‘s nachts.
Begin zomer 1974 kwam de onvrede over de bedenkelijke leefsituatie aan boord, het gebrek aan koers van Caroline en vooral het uitblijven van betalingen met een bijna muiterij tot een uitbarsting. Tegelijk was Mi Amigo-baas Sylvain Tack ontevreden over de inkomsten van die eerste periode, die achterbleven bij de populariteit van het station en – vooral in België – de goede luistercijfers. Dat had vooral te maken met de concurrentie met Veronica, Noordzee en Atlantis. Om zich van die stations te onderscheiden werd late lente van 1974 het format van Mi Amigo drastisch veranderd. In een programma was voortaan minstens de helft Vlaamse en Nederlandse product. Dat trok het nieuwe publiek aan dat bij Veronica en Noordzee maar nauwelijks aan bod kwam. Er kwamen die zomer steeds meer adverteerders en ook de platenmaatschappijen zagen hun kansen om bij Mi Amigo tegen betaling producties uit de NederBel te promoten.
De Joepie Top 50 van 30 juni 1974 werd indertijd op zondagmiddag door Ad Petersen gepresenteerd. Daarmee bleef Mi Amigo buiten de hitparadeconcurrentie tussen Veronica en Noordzee op de zaterdagmiddag! De retrohitparade in de presentatie van Ferry Eden is echter wel op zaterdagmiddag te beluisteren, op 29 juni 2024 tussen 12 en 3 via www.foutemuziekradio.nl. De Mi Amigo 50-versie vanaf de Castor, klinkt tussen 2 en 5 die zaterdagmiddag via www.miamigoradio.be en wel na Baken 16 met Marc Jacobs & Bart van Leeuwen. Na deze Top 50 draait Ad Petersen (Ad Roland, 17-18 uur) de nummer 1 hits van 1974 uit zijn tijd bij Radio Mi Amigo.
Het tijdelijke zendschip Castor in Terneuzen, kun je op 28, 29 en30 juni 2024 bezoeken en wellicht een deel van een liveprogramma bijwonen. On August 31st, 2024, it is fifty years ago that Radio Veronica, Radio Noordzee and Radio Atlantis had to cease broadcasting off the Dutch coast. Radio Caroline – just over a decade after its start – would continue the transmissions, flanked by Radio Mi Amigo, which had just started since January first 1974. The Flemish station used advertising revenu for keeping both radio stations ‘on air’ from their mutual radio ship in free international waters. After the Dutch anti-offshore radio law went into effect, the Mi Amigo story led to bizarre adventures, then off the British coast in the Thames Estuary.
Together with the stories of the other offshore radio stations of the 1960s and ‘70s, these adventures are contained in the book “Mi Amigo, de Vlaamse Tack van de zeezenders,” for sale at www.miamigoboek.eu! That summer of ‘74 there were three more radio ships off the coast of Scheveningen: Radio Veronica’s Norderney, Radio Noordzee’s MEBO II and, in between those two, Radio Caroline and Mi Amigo’s MV Mi Amigo. Unlike Veronica and Noordzee of Dutch ownership, Caroline had been a British offshore radio station since 1964, while Mi Amigo was owned by Belgian businessman (originally waffle baker) Sylvain Tack. For a serious amount of money, he had bought in half of the ownership of the MV Mi Amigo from the Caroline boss.
Off the Dutch-Belgium coast there was also the fourth radio ship Jeanine from Radio Atlantis with Adriaan van Landschoot as its Flemish owner. Four radio ships off the Dutch coast was quite a lot of free radio from the sea. The Roman-Red Dutch government, which was strongly against commercial “pirate stations” from international waters, wanted to prohibit any cooperation from Dutch citisens by law. With that impending law against radio from the sea, the offshore stations off the Dutch coast were in their final days, and no one knew how long they could continue broadcasting.
For Caroline owner Ronan O’ Rahilly, who had already defied British anti-offshore radio law in 1968, Dutch law did not seem an obstacle to continue with his radio station. At most, it was inconvenient that the Caroline House in The Hague would then be a thing of the past. Mi Amigo boss Tack, with his office and central studios in Breda, would also have to move with the coming into force of such a Dutch law. He already had plans to eventually use his Spanish holiday resort in Playa d’Aro for this purpose. The radio ship outside territorial waters on the free North Sea was elusive to any (new) Dutch legislation. On the radio ship, they were working on a second live studio to have the two radio stations to broadcast simultaneously instead of Radio Mi Amigo during the day and Radio Caroline only at night.
Just at the beginning of the summer of ’74, dissatisfaction with the questionable living situation on board, Caroline’s lack of direction and especially the lack of payments erupted and almost led to mutiny. At the same time, Mi Amigo boss Sylvain Tack was dissatisfied with the revenues of that first period, which lagged behind the popularity of the station and – especially in Belgium – the good listening figures. This was mainly due to the competition with Veronica, Noordzee and Atlantis. To distinguish itself from those stations, late spring of 1974 the format of Mi Amigo was drastically changed. From that point on, a program contained at least half Flemish and half Dutch products. This attracted the new audience that was barely touched at Veronica and Noordzee. More and more advertisers were attracted that summer, and record companies also saw their opportunities to promote ‘NederBel’ productions at Mi Amigo for a fee.
At the time, the Joepie Top 50 of June 30th, 1974 was presented on Sunday afternoons by Ad Petersen. This kept Mi Amigo out of the hit parade competition between Veronica and Noordzee on Saturday afternoons! However, the retro hit parade in Ferry Eden’s presentation can be heard on Saturday afternoon, on June 29th, 2024 between 12 and 3 via www.foutemuziekradio.nl. The Mi Amigo 50 version from the Castor, is broadcast between 2 and 5 that Saturday afternoon via www.miamigoradio.be just after Baken 16 with Marc Jacobs and Bart van Leeuwen. After this Top 50, Ad Petersen (Ad Roland, 5-6 p.m.) spins the 1974 number one hits from his time at Radio Mi Amigo.
