Retro Mi Amigo Top 50 van 23 juli 1977 met Ferry Eden, zaterdag op foutemuziekradio.nl
Het was een zonovergoten zaterdag, die 23e juli 1977. Op de Noordzee althans, waar onder een staalblauwe hemel rond het middaguur een Mi Amigo temperatuur van 21 graden werd gemeten. Aan boord van het gelijknamige zendschip waren Hugo Meulenhoff en Frank van der Mast de live deejays. De tapeprogramma’s uit Playa d’Aro werden gemaakt door Stan Haag, Michelle, Haike Debois, daarin bijgestaan door studiotechnicus Maurice Bokkebroek.
Marc Jacobs en nieuwkomer Herman de Graaf hadden vakantie en in Amsterdam maakten ze daags voor de 23e juli 1977 kennis met de nieuw aangenomen Mi Amigo deejay Ferry Eden. Hugo Meulenhof, sinds 17 januari bij het station betrokken, zat sinds 18 juni aan boord. Frank van der Mast, vanaf 1989 onder eigen naam Jan de Hoop bekend als RTL-ochtendnieuws presentator en op 4 augustus 1977 precies een jaar werkzaam voor Mi Amigo, was vanaf 9 juli weer op het zendschip.
De vier uur durende Top 50 van 23 juli 1977 werd vanaf 11 uur in de ochtend gepresenteerd door Frank van der Mast. Het had niet veel gescheeld of dat was niet doorgegaan, want precies een dag eerder was er tijdens een tapeprogramma een buis in het Gates-mengpaneel ontploft. Gelukkig kon technicus Peter Chicago het geheel snel repareren. Hij had sowieso een omvangrijke klus voor de boeg. Radio Mi Amigo zou dat weekend namelijk van 192 meter Middengolf (1562kHz) overgaan naar de nieuwe golflente 212 meter (1412 kHz).
Daartoe was besloten omdat er – na zeven maanden uitzenden op de 192 meter – veel klachten over slechte ontvangst en fading waren. Om de overstap naar de 212 meter te realiseren moest de antenne aangepast en getest worden, waar veel tijd in ging zitten. Frank en Hugo verzorgden die zaterdag tussen 6 en 7 het programma ‘192, het beste ermee’ en daarna was het zo’n 40 uur stil. Pas op maandag om 11.22 keerde het station terug met testuitzendingen en was er vanaf 12 uur een speciale Baken 16 met als titel ‘212, een beter idee’.
Aan land gingen de activiteiten dat weekend gewoon door, want gedurende 62 zomerdagen was er Mi Amigo’s kustactie ‘77. In de betreffende reclamespots, op de helft van ieder uitzenduur, werd de locatie van die dag doorgegeven. Bovendien was op het eind van zo’n spotje ook telkens één van de sponsors van de kustactie te horen. Er waren sowieso veel reclames in de programma’s, in de Top 50 na vrijwel iedere plaat en sommige adverteerders tweemaal per uur.
Ondank het ontbreken van vier nummer uit de Top 50, had Frank van der Mast de volle vier uur nodig voor die hitparade. De retroversie van Ferry Eden bevat alle 50 platen. Reclames worden om de plaat gedraaid en dubbele reclames per uur zijn er daarom niet. Om het programma in drie uur gedraaid te krijgen zijn ook diverse platen van 4 minuten en meer ingekort. Maar al met al biedt ook deze Top 50 weer de sfeer van toen en brengt het de luisteraar even terug naar 49 jaar geleden. Ferry Eden presents again the Mi Amigo Top 50 of April 22, 1978.
It was spring 1978 on the radioship Mi Amigo in the Thames Estuary off the British coast. On board were sailor Otto de Mi Amigo deejays Dick Verheul, Rob Hudson, Ferry Eden. He presented the Mi Amigo Top 50 in that period and on April 22nd too. Situation for Radio Mi Amigo had improved after a bad period in which Stan Haag, Michelle, Frank van der Mast, Hugo Meulenhoff and (as would appear temporary) Marc Jacobs had left the station. Because of their unexpected departure at the end of 1977, Ferry Eden had been on board for a long time and at that moment he had set a Mi Amigo record staying on the ship. On Caroline, Tony Allan was the one with that doubtful honour but both ‘records’ would be killed that summer of 1978 by a long stay of Marc Jacobs.
In December 1977 Ton Schipper was the new deejay in Playa d’Aro. On the radioship Rob Hudson half January 1978 was new, followed by Dick Verheul in Febuary and Johan Visser in March 1978. Herman de Graaf and Ferry Eden were the only two deejays left from the earlier period ruled by Sylvain Tack. His influence became more remote, especially since he had been told that the Spanish tolerated situation of Radio Mi Amigo would come to an end. Spain wanted to join the EEC and for that reason could not much longer give a legal home base to a offshore radiostation. Moreover, the Mi Amigo boss – with the departure of the old crew – was now convinced of the poor condition of the ship. Especially Stan Haag and Frank van der Mast, out of frustration, did not refrain from expressing a negative opinion in Dutch papers.
Nobody knew that the Flemish organizers Patrick Valain and Germain Boi had bought a ship in the Greek port of Piraeus that early Spring of 1978. Textile magnate and former Radio Atlantis owner Adriaan van Landschoot was one of the four financiers. Sylvain Tack was one of the others and secretly he would buy the medium wave transmitter in the United States as his contribution. The intention was to have a new, own Mi Amigo transmitter ready before the new autumn-winter season 1978-1979. The Mi Amigo managers thought that it would be highly irresponsible to stay on the old Caroline ship for another winter. Aboard the old radioship the Mi Amigo-studio with the antique Gates mixer was abandonned. A new DNR mixer had come on board and the opportunity was taken to build a new studio opposite the old one. The job was done by Peter Chicago and Otto. All programs came temporarily from the Caroline studio, below decks. The new studio was ready for use by the end of April, after Dick Verheul in his red “Corduroy” pants had inadvertently “christened” it by sitting on the freshly painted black studio table. The imprint of his pants on Otto’s studio table remained visible from that moment on. During the first days of May the sound quality still had to be polished. The Top 50 of April 22nd 1978 was packed with commercials, one after each record. Some advertisers even got twice an hour. In the retro version with Ferry Eden there are more advertisements than usual.
