Explanation :
The radio-lightship Jenni Baynton is a former Trinity House light vessel built in 1949, which after a turbulent life was refitted into a radio ship in 2005. Her 120 foot aerial mast together with her powerful transmitters have distributed the signal of various radio stations, a.o. Radio Waddenzee, all across Western Europe. She is the only radio ship left in The Netherlands and one of very few in the world.
In Harlingen seaport, her regular mooring in The Netherlands when she is not out at sea, she is not only well known for being a radio ship, but also a multi functional venue for meetings, exhibitions, lectures, work shops and acoustic concerts.
In 2026, from early June till July 7th, the ship will go offshore and anchor in the Waddensea. During that period radiostations will be broadcasting from her, but also various activities in the field of culture, education and social involvement are open for visitors. The final week of the offshore event coincides with the spectacular Tall Ship Race in Harlingen. Windjammers from acros the world will pass the ship by at close range.
Why this crowd funding?
The trust’s volunteers manage, maintain and restore the vessel. However some of the challenges exceed their capabilities like dry docking the ship and prepare the “underwater ship” for the near future. All to enable this 75 year old lady some more years withou a worry.
