Kurt’s visit to the MEBO II on August 6, 1974

On August 6th 1974, Kurt Sellenthin and Werner Tschoepe joined the RNI staff and other RNI fans on the Trip tender to visit the MEBO II. They arrived on the MEBO II while Erik Post was presenting Buitengaats. You will hear Rudi Kagon and a number of RNI fans, greeting friends and family. You will also hear Robin Banks reading the note from Werner with greetings to friends and family. And you will see Kurt walking towards the camera on the MEBO II.
This film is an extended version (with 2 minutes) of what was filmed and edited by Kurt back in 1974. No footage has been removed from that original edit. The original edit has been extended with other footage from Kurt to allow the greetings of Rudi Kagon and Werner (read by Robin Banks) to be included in the edit. Please note that this has been filmed from a boat out on the Northsea, which means that the picture sometimes is somewhat shaky.
This is the last film in a series of 11 Super 8 films from Kurt Sellenthin. We would like extend a big Thank You to Kurt for recording all these great memories on film and sharing that with us.
This film starts when the tender is approaching the radioship. In the background, in the distance, lies the Radio Veronica ship Norderney (at 37 seconds). Subsequently you will see the German engineer Rudi Kagon and other crew members on board of the MEBO II.
Next the mooring to the radioship and the lowering of the rope ladder. This is followed by footage of the set-up of the antenna mast and insulators.
At 1.28 minutes, Kurt is walking across the ship. This is followed by a look into the news room, the live broadcast with Eric Post, a view into the second studio, where a program from tape is currently playing, and the fluctuation meter can be seen.
Next there’s another look into the news room (with Gerard Reitsma) and the transmitter room, a look over the deck and then the rope ladder that is used to return to the tender.
Impressions of the multicolored radioship, the beach and pier in Scheveningen, and the motorway round off the short film.

The memories of Werner Tschoepe of August 6, 1974
At the beginning of August 1974, the date for the upcoming end of broadcasting was not yet known, but it was felt that the sea broadcasting adventure off Holland was coming to an end. On the boat trip around the offshore radiostations on August 3, 1974 (see his film about this) I met Kurt, who had already visited the Mebo 2 (see his film from July 31, 1973). He told me that a visit to the Mebo 2, RNI’s broadcasting ship, with the tender ship would be possible on Tuesday. He had already asked about this at the utility company’s office and it didn’t take long to persuade me to join on this trip. In the afternoon of August 6, in the office of the “Dick Roos” shipping company, which supplied Radio Northsea, we had to pay an amount of around 20 guilders, fill out a questionnaire with personal data and leave the passport as a deposit.
And then our trip to the Mebo 2 started. I remember a start time in the port of Scheveningen of around 3 p.m. Kurt and I were the only Germans, otherwise there were a few English people and several Dutch fans as passengers on the “Trip-Tender”. After the tender had moored next to the Mebo 2, we went on board via the rope ladder. While diesel and drinking water was pumped over, we had about 3 hours to walk around on the radioship.
First we went to a live broadcast on board, hosted by Eric Post. Later Robin Banks showed us around on the ship, through the studios, the private areas where the DJs had their booths, into the broadcast room, etc. In the mean time I was able to give Robin a note with a music request (Memories from Earth and Fire) and greetings to other big fans of RNI, to my brother Jürgen and school friend Ulli in my hometown of Pforzheim. The request for music and the greetings went over the antenna that same evening.
On the return trip, crew members, Rudi Kagon and Roger Kent and his fiancée accompanied us on our tender trip and were looking forward to the shore vacation. As enthusiastic listeners, we took the opportunity to interview the employees of our favorite radio station and listened to the anecdotes they told us.
At that time I only knew the DJs by their voices. I later saw on the photos that Kurt took of this trip that Don Allen was on board that day and that we were standing next to each other at the railing. Also Peter Ford was identified to be on board on photos from that day.
For me it was a really great Seesender experience that I have to thank Kurt for.

De originele montage is uitgebreid met ander beeldmateriaal van Kurt om de groeten van Rudi Kagon en Werner (voorgelezen door Robin Banks) in de montage te kunnen opnemen. Houd er svp rekening mee dat dit is gefilmd vanaf een boot op de Noordzee, waardoor het beeld soms wat minder stabiel kan zijn..

Gedurende de jaren ‘70 reisde Kurt Sellenthin (toen nog Kristkowitz) naar Nederland, maar ook naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk om radiostudio’s, radioschepen en andere radiostation gerelateerde sites te bezoeken.
Kurt nam altijd zijn cassette- en zelfs bandrecorder mee om airchecks op te nemen, nam zijn fotocamera mee om foto’s te maken én bracht zijn Super 8 filmcamera mee om zijn eigen (offshore) radiofilms te filmen.
De afgelopen periode zijn deze S8-films gedigitaliseerd en bewerkt om ze beschikbaar te maken op “Kurt’s Radio Films” kanaal op Youtube.
Kurt heeft zonder audio gefilmd, dus de audio is toegevoegd door Werner Tschoepe en mijzelf. De komende tijd zullen Werner en ik deze films één voor één publiceren en vandaag gaat de eerste film live.

During the seventies, Kurt Sellenthin (at that time his last name was Kristkowitz) travelled to The Netherlands, but also to the UK to visit radiostudio’s, radioships and other radiostation related sites.
Kurt always brought his cassette- and even taperecorder to record airchecks, brough his fotocamera to take still pictures ánd brought his Super 8 filmcamera to film his own (offshore) radio movies.
Over the past period, these S8 films have been digitised and further processed to make them available on Kurt’s Radio Films channel on Youtube.
Kurt filmed without audio, so the audio has been added by Werner Tschoepe and myself. In the coming period Werner and I will release these films one-by-one and today the first film is going live.

The scene, that starts at 2:14, includes Brian McKenzie, who can also be seen at the end of the film. From 2:45 onwards, Peter van Dijk and Erik Post are recording a radioprogram.

On July 28th, 1973, Kurt was one of the offshore radio fans to visit the Mi Amigo, the Norderney and the MEBO II. The trip was organised by the Free Radio Campaign (FRC) Holland of Hans Verbaan and was announced as the big 1973 annual trip of the Free Radio Campaigns of England, Belgium and Germany. Because of the large number of participants, over 180 in total, 90 from Germany alone, this trip took place with two ships, the “Zeester” and the “Morgenster” (both from Rederij J. Vrolijk). Kurt, like most German radio freaks, was probably traveling with the “Morgenster”.

Op 28 juli 1973 was Kurt één van de offshore radiofans die Mi Amigo, de Norderney en de MEBO II bezochten. De reis werd georganiseerd door de Free Radio Campaign (FRC) Holland van Hans Verbaan en werd neergezet als dé grote jaarlijkse reis van 1973 van de Free Radio Campaigns van Engeland, België en Duitsland. Vanwege het grote aantal deelnemers, ruim 180 in totaal, 90 alleen al uit Duitsland, vond deze reis plaats met twee schepen, de “Zeester” en de “Morgenster” (beiden van Rederij J. Vrolijk). Zoals de meeste Duitse radiofreaks, was Kurt hoogstwaarschijnlijk aan boord van de “Morgenster”.

Kurt’s visit to the MEBO II on July 31st, 1973

Following the big annual trip of the European FRCs in 1973, on July 28th, they met for a friendly exchange of ideas in the “Veronica Club” on the pier and later in a fish restaurant owned by “Jacq. Vrolijk”. Under the leadership of “Frank Leonhardt” (FRC Germany), they agreed to visit the RNI land studios in Bussum on Monday and try to take the tender ship to the MEBO II on Tuesday for those interested who would be in Scheveningen for a longer period of time.
This film documents this visit, that most probably took place on Tuesday, July 31st.
In the film you can see “Leo van der Goot”, “Hans ten Hooge”, “Dick de Graaf” in the studio and “Mike Ross” on a tour of the broadcasting room, amongst other RNI staff.

Kurt’s bezoek aan de MEBO II op 31 juli 1973
Na de grote jaarlijkse reis van de Europese FRC’s in 1973, op 28 juli, ontmoetten ze elkaar voor een vriendschappelijke samenkomst in de “Veronica Club” op de pier en later in een visrestaurant dat eigendom was van “Jacq. Vrolijk”. Onder leiding van “Frank Leonhardt” (FRC Duitsland) spraken ze af om maandag een bezoek te brengen aan de RNI-landstudio’s in Bussum en te proberen dinsdag, voor de geïnteresseerden die dan nog in Scheveningen zouden zijn, met de tender mee te gaan naar de MEBO II.
Deze film documenteert het MEBO II bezoek, dat hoogstwaarschijnlijk plaatsvond op dinsdag 31 juli.
In deze film zijn onder andere “Leo van der Goot”, “Hans ten Hooge”, “Dick de Graaf” in de studio te zien en “Mike Ross” tijdens een rondleiding door de zender ruimte.

In October 1972, Kurt went to Hamburg Harbour to shoot two short films of the MV Galaxy, the home of Radio London until August 14, 1967.
Early eighties, Kurt went to Amsterdam to shoot en short film of the MV Magda Maria, the home of Radio Paradijs, in Amsterdam Harbour.

Kurt’s bezoek aan de MV Galaxy en de MV Magda Maria aan de kade
In oktober 1972 ging Kurt naar de haven van Hamburg om twee korte films op te nemen van de MV Galaxy, de thuisbasis van Radio London tot 14 augustus 1967.
Begin jaren tachtig ging Kurt naar Amsterdam om een korte film te maken van de MV Magda Maria, de thuisbasis van Radio Paradijs, in de Amsterdamse haven.
Deze 3 films zijn een regelrechte kopie van wat door Kurt werd gefilmd en gemonteerd. Er is geen beeldmateriaal verwijderd uit die originele bewerking.
